Recognized for Excellence: My Experience with the Julia Margaret Cameron and Polux Awards

Three years ago on March 2020, just before the global COVID-19 pandemic took hold, I received two prestigious photography awards. The first was the Julia Margaret Cameron Award, an international competition that recognizes the work of women photographers from around the world. The award is named after Julia Margaret Cameron, a renowned 19th-century photographer who was a pioneer in portrait photography.

Winning the Julia Margaret Cameron Award was a great honor for me as a photographer. The competition judges artists based on their technical skill, artistic vision, and the emotional impact of their work. As a female photographer, it was a wonderful opportunity to be recognized among my peers and showcase my work to a wider audience.

The second award I received was the Polux Award, which included the gift of the gallery printing all 19 pieces of my Keeping the Flame series about the Jewish community in Cuba. The Polux Award is a prestigious international competition that recognizes outstanding work in photography. I was thrilled to be selected as a winner, and the opportunity to have my work printed and showcased by the gallery was a dream come true.

Overall, receiving these awards was a validation of the hard work and dedication that I have put into my photography. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with other artists and gain recognition for my talent and creativity. I am grateful for the recognition and validation that these awards have brought, and I look forward to continuing to pursue my passion for photography.

A large gratitude to the fotonostrum gallery in Barcelona Spain

I am actively seeking out galleries and museums worldwide who are interested in exhibiting the story of the small Jewish Cuban community through my artwork. Additionally, prints from the Keeping the Flame series are available for purchase by contacting me directly via email at michal@greenboim.com.

Exploring life's liminal moments through everyday symbolism - a fine art photography series

Capturing the beauty of life, one moment at a time."

As a fine art photographer, I have always been fascinated by the power of symbolism in my work. The simplest objects can hold so much meaning and evoke strong emotions in the viewer. This is why I was drawn to create a series of images that includes everyday objects such as butterflies, houses, trees, flowers,

In my latest series, I aim to explore the concept of liminality - a state of being between two stages or on the threshold. It's a concept that has always resonated with me, and I believe it's something we all experience in our lives. Whether it is the transition from childhood to adulthood, the end of a relationship or the loss of a loved one, we are constantly in a state of change.

The photographs in my series aim to capture these moments of change and transition, using symbols that are familiar and accessible to everyone. For example, the butterfly symbolizes transformation and growth, while a house represents stability and security. In my images, these symbols are often juxtaposed with elements of disorder, creating a sense of tension and uncertainty.

What I think is most exciting about this series is the way different people can interpret it in different ways. Some viewers may see the photographs as a celebration of life's journey and the changes we go through, while others may see them as a commentary on the fragility of our lives and the forces that can disrupt our sense of security.

For those interested in owning this piece, the series is for sale and available in limited edition. Whether you see these images as a reflection of your own experiences or as abstract commentary on the world around us, I believe they will resonate with you on a deep and personal level. So why not take a closer look at this series and see what speaks to you?

Discovering the Boundaries and Belonging of a Closed Religious Community.

personal tisch and convey the intrigue of their world and its distinctiveness from my own."

As an artist, I am always fascinated by communities that are isolated from the outside world. In "Boundaries," I capture my experience in a closed religious community known as the "ultra-Orthodox." This community lives in a ghetto and is closed off from the Western world, creating an air of strangeness and foreignness to outsiders. Despite being a religious Jew myself, I found their world intriguing and unique from my own.

I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph them at a personal tisch, where I experienced the event from a female perspective. I sat in the women's section and watched as the men danced and sang downstairs, feasting on challah and wine poured for the most distinguished of those gathered. The women, however, observed the celebration from upstairs, only able to watch through the glass. Despite being separated, I still felt the excitement of the women around me as they saw the size of the gathering.

What struck me the most was observing the intimate moments between families in public spaces. The fathers played with the children, the women chatted and served food, and I witnessed their personal prayers in the public garden, and loving embraces in view of the sea. The only noticeable difference between them and other families was their clothing; the men in white shirts with tzitzit sticking out and the women in long skirts and head coverings.

The creation of boundaries between the ultra-Orthodox community and the rest of the world is necessary for them to maintain their sense of identity and belonging. And for them, it's easier to create a sense of community and belonging by differentiating themselves from outsiders. My experience with this closed religious community was a unique insight into their world, and it taught me the importance of maintaining a strong identity and sense of belonging within a community.

till she dreams of joining in

Of feeling the music deep within

But she knows she'll never dance in the men's section

Where only the men have that kind of affection

A young girl sits in the women's section

Watching the men dance with such devotion

Their bodies move with grace and pride

While she sits and feels inside

She sees the joy in their eyes so bright

And feels a twinge of longing take flight

But she knows her place in the community's hold

And the importance of her role to uphold

So she'll dance in her heart and in her soul

Feeling the joy and love that makes her whole

For though she may not dance in the men's section

Her love for the music and tradition has its own connection.

Exhibiting 'Orchard Trails': A Photographer's Experience at the Griffin Museum of Photography

In 2018, I was honored to be chosen as the winner of a competition hosted by the LACP a photography organization in Los Angeles. As the winner, I was awarded a solo exhibition at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston, curated by Paula Tognarelli, the museum's chairman. I was thrilled and excited for this opportunity to showcase my work in a respected institution like the Griffin Museum.

The exhibition, titled "Orchard Trail," was a culmination of my work as a photographer, featuring a series of 19 diptychs that explored the relationship between two images to tell a single story. Paula was drawn to my diptych work, recognizing how two photos could convey a story and convey emotions that might be difficult to achieve through a single image.

"Orchard Trails" is not only an exhibition but also a photographic art book that I created. It showcases my diptychs and explores the relationship between two images, telling a single story through a series of 19 diptychs.

It was a proud moment for me to present my work at the Griffin Museum, as it was my first solo exhibition. Friends from Maine media workshops and family from Israel came to support me, making it even more special.

The exhibition was well-received, and I was honored to receive a glowing review in the Boston Globe by Mark Feeney. In his critique, he noted the simplicity and complexity of my work, saying, "Greenboim, an Israeli-born photographer who now lives in California, plays off of uniform presentation with highly varied subject matter."

The exhibition not only allowed me to showcase my work, but it also provided me with the opportunity to meet and connect with other talented artists in the fine art photography world. These connections have continued until today, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have met such amazing and talented individuals.

In conclusion, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Paula Tognarelli for opening the door for me and allowing me to take my first steps into the exciting world of fine art photography. The experience of exhibiting my work at the Griffin Museum was a highlight of my career as a photographer and has given me the confidence to continue creating and sharing my art with the world.

  9. "Home isn't a place, it's a feeling." - Cecelia Ahern

  10. "It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end." - Ursula K. Le Guin

These quotes remind us of the importance of having a place to call home and the value of the journey to get there. They encourage us to appreciate the journey itself, with all its twists and turns, as it is what ultimately shapes and defines us.

Capturing the Beauty and Symbolism of Birds: Exploring the World of Bird Photography

Capturing the Beauty and Symbolism of Birds: Exploring the World of Bird Photography - part 1

taking pictures of birds is more than just a pastime for me – it's a way of connecting with nature and capturing the beauty and symbolism of these magnificent creatures. Through my art, I aim to express my admiration for the grace, freedom, and diversity that birds represent. Each time I capture a bird's image, I feel a sense of wonder and gratitude for the natural world.

In Franz Rosenzweig's words, "The bird is the messenger of the infinite; the sun is the image of the infinite; the eagle is the emblem of the infinite." This quote perfectly encapsulates my feelings towards birds. As an artist, I strive to convey the sense of transcendence and mystery that birds evoke. Each bird is a symbol of the boundless creativity and diversity of life, a reminder that there is always something new to discover and appreciate.

Through my pictures, I hope to inspire others to develop a deeper appreciation for birds and the natural world. Whether it's a soaring eagle or a tiny sparrow, each bird has its own unique beauty and charm. By capturing and sharing these images, I hope to connect with others who share my love for birds and to inspire a sense of wonder and reverence for the world around us.

As an artist, I am always thrilled to share my work with others who appreciate it. If you are interested in purchasing one of my bird photographs, please feel free to reach out to me. Each print is produced with the highest quality materials and attention to detail, ensuring that it will be a stunning addition to your collection or home decor.

Not only will you be acquiring a beautiful piece of art, but you will also be supporting the efforts of conservation organizations that work to protect the habitats of these incredible creatures. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to these organizations, helping to ensure that future generations will continue to appreciate and admire the beauty of birds.

Thank you for considering my work. I am honored to be able to share my passion for birds with others through my photography. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more or purchasing a print.

Orchard Trail is Part of the Hotel Seabird Art Collection

:

Ocean side Museum and Hotel Seabird's curator, Rebecca Webb, has done an incredible job of selecting and displaying artwork that creates a cohesive and welcoming atmosphere for guests. From the lobby to the guest rooms, the artwork is thoughtfully curated to evoke a sense of warmth and comfort.

During the selection process for the Hotel Seabird's art collection, Rebecca Webb, the curator of the Oceanside Art Museum, chose my artwork for its unique and eye-catching design. The selected artwork is a diptych consisting of two separate pieces, each measuring 30" x 20".

On the right side of the diptych, I captured a close-up of hair over a blue and white stripe dress. The hair is beautifully styled and shines with a lustrous sheen, while the dress provides a bold backdrop to accentuate the hair's beauty.

On the left side of the diptych, I created a shadow image of a flower on the floor, with the green stem color adding a subtle pop of color to the otherwise neutral composition. The image captures the delicate beauty of the flower, and the shadow effect adds a touch of mystery and intrigue to the piece.

Rebecca Webb was particularly drawn to this diptych because of its unique design and the way it captures the essence of natural beauty in a modern and abstract way. The combination of the hair and flower imagery creates a stunning visual contrast that is both striking and alluring.

It was a great honor to have my artwork selected for the Hotel Seabird's art collection, and I am proud to have my work displayed alongside the other talented artists in the collection. I hope that visitors to the hotel will appreciate the unique beauty and depth of this diptych, and that it will inspire them to explore and appreciate the world around them

photographing stars

taking pictures of the stars at night can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it requires some preparation and specialized equipment. Here are the basic steps you can follow to take a good picture of the stars:

  1. Choose a dark location: Find a location away from city lights and light pollution. The darker the sky, the more stars you will be able to see and photograph.

  2. Use a tripod: You will need a stable surface to mount your camera on, so that it remains still while taking long exposure shots.

  3. Use a wide-angle lens: A wide-angle lens will allow you to capture a larger portion of the sky and more stars in a single shot.

  4. Set your camera to manual mode: You will need to manually adjust the settings on your camera to take pictures of the stars. Set the focus to manual and infinity, and use a wide aperture (f/2.8 or lower) to let in as much light as possible.

  5. Adjust the shutter speed and ISO: Start with a shutter speed of around 20-30 seconds and an ISO of around 1600-3200, and adjust as necessary depending on the brightness of the stars and the amount of light pollution in your area. Experiment with different settings to find the best balance between exposure and noise.

  6. Use a remote or timer: To prevent camera shake, use a remote or the camera's built-in timer to trigger the shutter.

  7. Experiment with composition: Try different angles and compositions to find the most interesting and visually appealing shot.

  8. Post-processing: After taking your pictures, you can enhance the colors and details of your photos using photo editing software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop.

Keep in mind that taking pictures of the stars can be challenging and may take some practice to get the hang of, but with the right equipment and preparation, you can capture some stunning shots of the night sky.

Tips for home decor

Art photography has become an increasingly popular choice for home decor. With the abundance of stunning images captured by photographers around the world, there is no shortage of beautiful pieces to choose from. Whether you prefer landscapes, portraits, abstracts, or something in between, there is a photograph out there that is perfect for your home. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of using art photography for home decor and offer some tips for choosing the right pieces to complement your space.

Benefits of Using Art Photography for Home Decor

  1. Adds a personal touch: Art photography is a great way to add a personal touch to your home. Choosing pieces that resonate with you or reflect your interests can help create a space that is uniquely yours.

  2. Makes a statement: Art photography can make a bold statement in your home. Large prints or pieces with vibrant colors can draw the eye and become a focal point in your space.

  3. Enhances ambiance: The right art photography can enhance the ambiance of your home. For example, serene landscapes or calming images can create a sense of tranquility, while bold and dramatic images can add excitement and energy.

  4. Complements existing decor: Art photography can complement existing decor in your home. By choosing pieces that incorporate colors or themes from your existing decor, you can create a cohesive and well-designed space.

Tips for Choosing Art Photography for Your Home

  1. Consider the style of your home: When choosing art photography for your home, it is important to consider the style of your space. If you have a modern home, you may want to choose pieces with clean lines and minimalist designs. If your home is more traditional, you may want to choose pieces with classic subject matter or framing.

  2. Choose the right size: When selecting art photography for your home, consider the size of the space where it will be displayed. A small piece may get lost in a large room, while a large piece may overwhelm a small space.

  3. Frame it properly: Proper framing can make all the difference when it comes to art photography. Choose a frame that complements the style and colors of the piece and consider using a mat to give the piece some breathing room.

  4. Consider the subject matter: When choosing art photography for your home, consider the subject matter and how it will fit in with your existing decor. For example, if you have a beach-themed bathroom, a photograph of the ocean may be the perfect addition.

  5. Invest in quality pieces: Art photography can be a valuable investment. While it may be tempting to choose lower-priced pieces, investing in quality pieces can pay off in the long run. High-quality prints and frames will last longer and retain their value over time.

In conclusion, art photography is a great choice for home decor. With its ability to add a personal touch, make a statement, enhance ambiance, and complement existing decor, it is no wonder that more and more people are turning to this medium to adorn their homes. By following these tips for choosing the right pieces, you can create a beautiful and well-designed space that reflects your personal style and tastes

In this blog post, we'll explore some tips for buying fine art photography prints.

Tip #1: Buy limited edition prints

When it comes to fine art photography, limited edition prints are generally considered more valuable and collectible than open edition prints. Limited edition prints are typically numbered and signed by the artist, and only a certain number of prints are produced. This makes each print unique and special, and can increase its value over time.

Tip #2: Invest in quality paper and ink

The quality of the paper and ink used in fine art photography prints can make a big difference in their appearance and longevity. Tip #3: Buy from reputable sellers

When buying fine art photography prints, it's important to buy from reputable sellers who are knowledgeable about the art form and can provide information about the artist and the print itself. Look for sellers who have a good reputation in the art community and who can provide a certificate of authenticity with your purchase.Directly from the artist is your best choice.

Tip #4: Consider the framing

The framing of your fine art photography print can also make a big difference in its appearance and longevity. Look for frames that are made with high-quality materials, such as hardwood or metal, and that use UV-protective glass or acrylic to prevent fading and damage from sunlight.

Tip #5: Choose a piece that speaks to you

Finally, when buying fine art photography prints, it's important to choose a piece that speaks to you personally. Whether you're drawn to a particular subject, color palette, or style, choosing a piece that resonates with you will ensure that you'll enjoy it for years to come.

Words from a gallery owner

from Alex dearest friend , gallery owner in Tel Aviv.

As an art gallery owner, I have the privilege of working with a diverse range of artists, including those who specialize in fine art photography. Fine art photography is a beautiful and valuable genre that has the power to evoke emotion, tell a story, and enhance the aesthetic of any space. I am always excited to showcase the work of talented fine art photographers in my gallery, and to connect collectors with these beautiful and unique pieces of art.

One of the most exciting aspects of working with fine art photography is the opportunity to explore the many different techniques and styles that photographers use to create their work. Each photographer has a unique vision and approach, and it's always a pleasure to see how they use creative lighting, composition, and post-processing methods to create a particular mood or emotion in their images.

As an art gallery owner, I'm also very aware of the role that fine art photography can play in interior design. A well-placed fine art photograph can act as a focal point, complementing the colors and textures of the surrounding decor and adding depth and personality to any room. The World Through My Lens: A Photographer's Perspective

As a photographer, I see the world in a unique way. Everywhere I look, I see potential for a great shot. The way the light falls on a subject, the texture of a surface, and the expressions on people's faces all catch my eye and inspire me to capture the moment.

Photography is not just about taking pictures, it's about telling stories. Whether I am shooting portraits, landscapes, or events, I am always looking for ways to convey a message or evoke an emotion through my images. I pay attention to the details and composition, looking for the best angle and framing to create a visually striking image.

I am constantly learning and experimenting with new techniques and styles. Photography is a never-ending journey of discovery and growth, and I am always striving to improve my craft. I believe that the power of photography lies in its ability to capture a moment in time and preserve it for future generations to see and appreciate.

Photography is not just a job or a hobby for me, it's a passion. It allows me to express myself creatively and connect with the world around me in a meaningful way. Whether I am shooting for myself or for a client, I am always driven by the desire to create something beautiful and meaningful through my lens.

Difference Between Decorative and Modern Art

As a photograph, I have witnessed the evolution of art through the ages, from the modernist movement of the early 20th century to the contemporary art of today. While both modern and contemporary art have impacted my form, I have come to realize that there are some key differences between the two.

Modern art was characterized by a rejection of traditional techniques and a focus on experimentation with form, color, and line. It sought to break away from the academic norms of the time and embrace new forms of expression. As a photograph, I have witnessed this rebellion firsthand. Many modernist artists used photography as a tool to explore new visual concepts, such as surrealism and abstraction.

In contrast, contemporary art is characterized by a more diverse range of styles and mediums, including photography. It often reflects current social, political, and cultural issues and seeks to engage viewers in a dialogue about these issues. As a photograph, I have witnessed the power of contemporary art to provoke discussion and inspire change.

While both modern and contemporary art have utilized photography as a means of expression, I have come to realize that the approach to photography has changed. In modern art, photography was often used as a means of experimentation and abstraction, while contemporary art uses photography as a tool to capture and document the world around us.

As a photograph, I am proud to have played a role in the development of modern and contemporary art. Whether I am a part of an abstract piece of modern art or a documentary-style photograph in a contemporary exhibition, I am a reflection of the changing attitudes and approaches to art throughout history.

Exploring the Liminal: The Beauty of Abstract Photography in Fine Art

I am particularly drawn to exploring the concept of liminality through my work. In my liminal series, I mostly use the abstract method to capture images that convey a sense of transition, transformation, and in-betweenness I am always seeking new and creative ways to express myself through my images. One of my favorite genres of photography is abstract photography. There's something about the way that abstract photography challenges the viewer's perception and encourages them to see the world in a different way that I find endlessly fascinating.

With abstract photography, I am able to create images that are not immediately recognizable or identifiable. Instead, they rely on color, shape, form, texture, and line to convey a mood, emotion, or idea. This allows me to explore the boundaries of photography and push the medium to its limits.

One of the things I love most about abstract photography is the freedom it gives me to experiment and play with different techniques and materials. I can use a wide range of tools and methods, such as long exposures, multiple exposures, macro photography, and intentional camera movement, to create unique and interesting images. By exploring different materials, such as water, light, and reflective surfaces, I am able to create images that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Another reason I love capturing abstract photography is that it allows me to tap into my own creativity and imagination. Rather than simply capturing what is in front of me, I am able to create something entirely new that reflects my own unique perspective and vision. This makes the process of creating abstract photography incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

Ultimately, I believe that abstract photography has the power to transport viewers to another world, one that is full of mystery, intrigue, and beauty. It challenges them to think beyond what is immediately visible and encourages them to explore their own perceptions and emotions. As a fine art photographer, there is nothing more satisfying than capturing an abstract image that resonates with viewers on a deep and personal level.

The Power of Color: Why I Choose Color Photography in Fine Art

I have always been drawn to the vivid, rich colors of color photography. While black and white photography certainly has its place in the world of art, I have always found that color photography allows me to express myself in a more dynamic and vibrant way.

One of the main reasons why I prefer color photography over black and white is because it allows me to capture the world around me as I see it. When I look at a scene, I am drawn to the colors and hues that are present, and I want to capture that essence in my images. Color photography allows me to do just that, by preserving the natural beauty and vibrancy of the world in my images.

Another reason why I love color photography is because it allows me to convey mood and emotion in a more nuanced way. Colors have the power to evoke specific emotions, whether it's the warmth of a golden sunset or the cool, calming blues of a peaceful lake. By utilizing color in my photography, I am able to create images that are not only visually striking but that also convey a deeper emotional resonance.

I also appreciate the technical challenges that come with color photography. Getting the colors just right requires a lot of skill, patience, and attention to detail. From choosing the right color temperature to adjusting saturation levels, every step of the process requires careful consideration and precision.

Of course, this is not to say that black and white photography does not have its own unique beauty and power. However, for me, color photography allows me to express myself in a more vibrant and nuanced way. It allows me to capture the world as I see it, and to convey the full range of emotions and moods t
